I’m often asked what my favorite city is and I always have a difficult time answering that question. My favorite city? There are so many. It is no secret that I am absolutely obsessed with Italy and places like Florence and Positano hold a special place in my heart. However, I feel strong ties to Southeast Asia as well. Perhaps it’s because it was my first solo trip? Then again, I’d like to think that Southeast Asia is place that anyone would fall absolutely head over heels in love with. After I spent nine weeks traveling around Southeast Asia, I’ve narrowed it down to my top 5 destinations. Here they are!
Chiang Mai
Located in Northern Thailand, Thailand’s unofficial “second city” is a complete contrast to Bangkok. Here you will find a city with a relaxed vibe surrounded by spectacular mountains and vibrant hill tribes. Life moves at a slower pace in Chiang Mai. Enjoy sitting at a cafe devouring Khao Soi watching life slowly pass by. Yoga, mountain biking, Muay Thai – these are just some of the many things you can find in Chiang Mai. Not to mention a night market that is one of the best I’ve yet to experience.

Gili Islands
If I had to give an answer to the “what is your favorite destination” question, then I’d undoubtedly answer the Gili Islands. This is as close to paradise as you can get. Late night revelers will want to stay on Gili Trawangan. Gili Air and Gili Meno tend to be much more laid back.

Hội An
Located in Vietnam’s central Quang Nam Province, on the north bank near the mouth of the Thu Bon River, Hội An was a small-scale trading port active the 15th to 19th centuries. When it rains, the town often floods due to its position along the river bank making many places inaccessible. The market is a must-see and be sure to take a cooking class.

Siem Reap
What is there not to love about Siem Reap. The people are friendly, the food is incredible and it is home to Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. Be sure to venture down to Pub Street for the best nightlife scene.

Ubud
Any visit to Bali wouldn’t be complete without spending some time in tranquil Ubud, the epicenter of Balinese culture and art. Often synonymous with the Sacred Monkey Forest, Ubud is where you come to escape the party scene in Kuta. Ubud also has some of the best Indonesian food in Bali. I had the opportunity to road trip around Bali and experience many of the surrounding areas outside of Ubud.
