Best Hiking Trails in Laguna Beach

FLICKR/Dan Clemmons
There is no shortage of hikes in Laguna Beach. Here are the best of the best.

Don’t be fooled by the laid back beach vibe in Orange County, we are a collection of foodies, fitness freaks and beach bums. And I mean that in a good way. One of the best things about living in Southern California is being able to enjoy the outdoors year-round, which means we can exercise outside all year long. Sure, the winter months can get a bit nippy and you will undoubtedly hear Southern Californians complaining about the freezing, windy or rainy weather that doesn’t hold a candle to the harsh winter months endured by other places around the world.

One of my favorite things to do is go hiking, especially with my partner in crime. Rarely do I go hiking without my trusty, four-legged companion. However, there are some hikes in Orange County that are not dog-friendly but are so worth the views, workout, what have you that I go nevertheless. Here are my picks for the best hiking trails in the OC.

Water Tank Trail

18751 Laguna Canyon Rd, Laguna Beach | more info

Let’s work those glutes! The beginning of this trail has one of the steepest grades in Laguna Beach. This is the ultimate locals’ hike and go-to for a quick workout that is guaranteed to generate a sweat. Again, dogs not necessarily allowed but I’ve never had a problem.

Top of the World

W Ridge, Laguna Beach | more info

Part of the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, this is possibly one of the most hiked trails in all of Laguna due to the panoramic views. However, that being said, this isn’t one of my go-to hikes for the reason that it is incredibly popular and therefore can be pretty crowded. Nonetheless it is a great hike – especially for those visiting the area!

El Moro Canyon

8471 N. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach | more info

This hike is part of the Crystal Cove State Park trails. El Moro Canyon Loop Trail is a fairly moderate, 3.9 mile loop trail. The one thing I love about this trail is that you can start it and then shoot off on other trails making the hike shorter or longer. Crystal Cove State Park has a ton of different trails from which to choose. I have the insider’s tip to hiking the state park for free without paying for parking! You can read all about hiking this trail hereNote: Dogs are not allowed on this trail but if you read my insider tip, then you will never run into a park ranger and can bring fido along.
