The other day I traveled about an hour outside of New Orleans to the community of Vacherie to visit Oak Alley Plantation. This historic plantation is located right on the banks of the Mississippi River and dates back to the 1800s. The Bon Séjour plantation, as Oak Alley was originally named, was established to grow sugarcane, by Valcour Aime when he purchased the land in 1830. The plantation would pass through many owners and ultimately it was left to the Oak Alley Foundation in 1972 when the final owner, Josephine Stewart, died.
I spent a few hours exploring the grounds, including the slave quarters, before heading to the plantation restaurant. The food was one of the best I had during my three weeks in New Orleans. Granted I just had a grilled shrimp salad, I was still impressed.
Be sure to make the drive out to Oak Alley when visiting New Orleans. It is well worth the hour drive.
