The Wedge in Newport Beach

Hurricane Marie is making some major waves along the California Coast. Surfers and bodyboarders shred the waves at The Wedge in Newport Beach.

One of the most popular places in Newport Beach is The Wedge. In fact, I even have friends making an entire documentary about it. In August 2014, just as I was returning from Cabo San Lucas, Hurricane Marie was making its way up the California Coast and, in turn, making some serious waves.

Thousands of people came to stand along the shoreline at The Wedge to watch surfers and bodyboarders shred the waves. By the time I got there, the storm was beginning to weaken but I was still able to capture some incredible shots of the high surf with waves topping over 20 feet. These are some of the largest waves seen at The Wedge since 1997.
